Ingredients:
1/2 kilo beef, cut into cubes
5 cloves garlic, chopped finely
1 medium onion, cut quartered
1 large onion, chopped
1 inch fresh ginger, chopped finely
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 pcs star anise
1 tbsp cornstarch, dissolve in 1/4 cup water
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 bunch bok choy, or any vegetables you desire (optional)
1 tbsp sesame seeds, to garnish
2 tbsp chopped green onions, to garnish
Directions:
1. In a medium pot, put 5 cups of water, add cubed beef and quartered onion. Boil for 45 minutes in a medium heat or until meat is tender. Or if you have a pressure cooker, you can lessen the amount of time in boiling. Once cooked, separate the meat and the broth. Set aside.
2. In a medium skillet, heat oil and fry ginger, garlic and onion. Saute for 2 minutes till light brown and onion is translucent, then add the cooked beef and star anise. Add 1 cup of the beef broth . Mix then add soy sauce and brown sugar. Add sesame oil. Simmer for another five minutes before adding cornstarch. If there is vegetables, just blanch it in hot water for 3 minutes, then add to the beef mixture. Once the blanched vegetable is added to the beef, mix together and remove from the heat. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.
